Green Remodeling - an option even in Hawaii Kai
We don't have heating bills in Hawaii Kai, but still can save on our energy costs, and some of the newer homes do have air conditioning. Here are some suggestions to bring green ideas into your home.
Toilets, showers, and faucets account for 60% of water usage in the home. Replace these items with more efficient models and save up to 11,000 gallons of water per year for an average family.
When buying or replacing appliances, choose energy-efficient models. Federal ENERGY STAR-rated appliances are designed to use 10-50% less energy and water than standard models, and save an average of 30% in energy costs.
If you have central air, install a programmable thermostat to set your equipment to automatically turn on or off to match your schedule and create a comfortable and energy-efficient living environment. These units offer savings about 10-15% on your electric bill.
Old windows usually leak. Again, if you have air conditioning, new windows are 3 times more efficient. Consider replacing the leaky windows, or sealing around them.
Remember, Thinking Green is not only good for you and the environment, but will save you money.
