Superferry Supporters Still Working to Revive the Service
Lawmakers in the state legislature are considering several ideas to bring back the Superferry service to Hawaiian waters. Obviously, one proposal is to amend and clarify the environmental protection law used in the court ruling on the Superferry.
Sen. Fred Hemmings (R-Hawaii Kai) said, "There's a chance a bill can be passed this session that could open the doors for the ferry service to come back." The plan would eliminate secondary impact considerations during an environmental review process. Environmental groups say the laws are necessary, but Sen. Hemmings disagrees.
Not only Sen. Hemmings supports bringing back the ferry, but he feels it is important to Hawaii's image around the world and as a destination for tourists. Senate President Colleen Hanabusa (D-Nanakuli, Makaha) adds, "Let us be clear: the legal challenge was on Kahului only. So technically the Superferry could operate from Oahu to Kauai, from Oahu to the Big Island." She thinks the ferry would come back if the financial incentives are still offered.
Another proposal is to use the other catamaran recently built instead of the Alakai. The new boat has a built-in ramp, which means it would not need to go through an environmental review process because it does not use harbor improvements.
This certainly is a contentious issue and one that affects the economy of our state. If you have an opinion, contact your legislative representative while they are still in session.
